"Is she gonna wake up?"
The doctor looked at me with one of those pitious looks that made me angry. "We're not sure. It's a slim chance."
I bit my lip slightly. "What exactly caused it, Doc?"
"The crash did some damage to her head. Not only that, but it might have been a mental shutdown from the pain."
I stared at Shizuka's limp body, frail and weak-looking, bruised, cut. She wasn't the Shizuka I knew at all. She was hooked up to a breathing machine and a few IVs.
"And you can't help her?" I asked in a whisper.
"Not without the payment, sir. The insurance doesn't cover this. I am terribly sorry..." With that the doctor put a hand on my shoulder before leaving slowly.
I sank into the chair beside her bed and gently took her hand. "It's gonna be okay, Shizuka. I promise. I'll find some way. I will."
I slumped in the chair, my eyes closing slowly. "I can't tell them... though... they'll... I dunno... they'll freak..." With that, I nodded off to sleep against my will, falling forward so my head hit the matress beside her arm.

Mokuba sighed, walking beside Seto as he walked around the hospital. "Why are we doing this, Nii-sama?"
"Appearances' sake," he explained, nodding to a few people walking by.
He sighed again. "This is so boring."
His attention was suddenly diverted to a room. "Nii-sama. Something doesn't feel right. About that room." His forehead creased in a frown.
"You want to go inside." He said it as a statement, not a question.
"Very much so. Let's go." With that, Mokuba knocked, then opened the door slowly. His attentions first settled on a mop of blond hair on the bed before deciding the figure was asleep.
"Aww... I bet he's stayed with her since she was admitted. How sweet," he cooed softly, smiling. Until he saw the pale figure in the bed as he walked closer.
A ragged gasp tore from his throat, eyes wide. "Shizuka...!" he squeaked out, horrified.
Seto picked him up gently as he clung to him. He looked at the bed, and his eyes widened. "Jou... and Shizuka..." he whispered.
He closed his eyes, then settled in the chair opposite Jou's, on the other side of the bed. Mokuba perched in his lap, his head buried in his neck to muffle his astonished whimpering. "Shh..." he crooned, rubbing his younger brother's back gently.
And he waited.
------------------
I opened one eye slowly, then the other. "Ugh..." I stretched slightly, then noticed the two figures in the chair opposite him.
"How long, Jounouchi?"
I cringed. I knew that insanely familiar voice, the one that haunted me in my dreams. Good and bad. "How long what?" I mumbled.
"Did you plan to keep this from us?"
"Until it all blew over," I admitted.
My eyes focused clearer then, and I could make out Mokuba, clinging to Seto's neck, asleep with his arms around him. "How long you been waiting?"
Seto shrugged, a mere twitch of his shoulders. "I don't know. Two or three hours, maybe. He fell asleep within an hour."
I squeezed my eyes closed, sighing. "Sorry..."
"Shut up."
"I mean it. I'm sorry."
"Shut up."
"Well, what do you want me to say?!"
"Nothing. And keep it down."
I clenched his teeth together before sighing. My shoulders slumped slightly, and I turned his head to watch Shizuka in silence for a few moments. I'm sure the pain I felt was reflected through my eyes as I sat still, merely watching.
After a moment of silence, Seto broke it. "I'll give you the money."
"I don't want your money."
"Yes, you do."
"No."
"You'll take it, Jounouchi, if I have to hand it to them myself."
"No. I'm planning to kill myself if she dies."
"Damn it, Jou!" Seto hissed, making Mokuba shift slightly, mumbling to himself. "No, hell no, you can't!"
I shrugged. "Why do you care?"
Seto paused, then sighed. "I don't know, mutt..."
I smiled slightly at the brunette. "You admitted it."
We stared at each other for a few minutes before we both decided it was now or never.
"Listen I have to-" "I want you to know-"
We paused.
"Go ahead-" "You go first-"
We glowered for a moment.
"You go ahead-" "Go first-"
We both looked frustrated.
"Fine, dammit!" Seto growled. "You go first."
"Fine." I glared for a moment before saying in a rush,"Ilikeyou? IvelikedyouforalongtimeandIneverwantedtotellyoubecauseyoudlaughandstuffsoyeah."
Seto blinked a few minutes, to decipher what I'd said, before he snorted. "Huh."
"What?!"
"We think too much alike. Or not. Maybe that is the problem."
"What're you getting at?"
"I." He seemed to struggle here. "L-like. You. Too."
I thought a moment, then smiled. "Well, that's a relief."
Seto rolled his eyes. "Whatever."
Mokuba suddenly giggled. "I knew it!" he said triumphantly, then his eyes darted to Shizuka, almost apologetically, as though he would disturb her "sleep".
Seto rolled his eyes again. "You rugrat."
-------------------
Time passed. Like it always did.
Shizuka died in the spring of that year. I have to admit, I was tempted.
But Seto helped me through it. Told me not to do anything stupid. Like play in traffic.
I had to snort at the backwardsness of that. Not long ago, he'd have been the one TELLING me to go play in traffic, not stay away from it.
But regardless. I smiled softly as I stood under the cherry blossom tress, thinking about Shizuka.
I felt his arms around me, and I smiled slightly wider.
"I love you."
"You too."
