Mika gasped softly, backing away from the room. Her eyes squeezed closed, her back hitting a wall. She automatically sank to the floor, curling into a ball. Her arms locked tightly around her legs, her sobs stifled by the denim of her jeans.
The house was silent, dead silent, except for those horrible noises. Almost as though no human, living thing save her had ever touched it. She knew better, though. Knew who was in the other room, turning a little girl's dreams to nightmares. She clutched her head, stopping her ears with her palms to cut off the frightened wails.Tears slipped out from underneath her closed eyelids before she could stop them.
And she knew she could never, ever make him stop. She didn't have the power. Every night she'd have to hear this, and it seemed she was the only one who did. She, along with that frightened girl, was dying. It wouldn't end until her breath stopped.
With this realization, an almost overwhelming need to stop her life overtook her. Somehow, she kept her head above the surface, kept her mind clear. The girl's wails turned to shrieks and sobs, penetrating her hands to her brain.
The door opened. A shadow walked out, casting its darkness over her. She didn't look up, knew who she would see.
"Mika."
His voice, so easy and smooth, sent a shiver down her spine, made her heart quicken.
"Kit. Please listen."
Her shoulder twitched at her father's old nickname. No. She wouldn't (couldn't!) listen. Not tonight.
"Kit, please. It was all a mistake."
Liar. She shuddered, noting the close proximity of his breath to her nose.
"Kit, please understand."
Mika shook her head numbly, tears flowing in angry, salty rivers.
"Kit..."
No. She wouldn't listen...
"Mika..."
She... couldn't succumb...
"Mika, wake up."
And then she opened her eyes to darkness, shivering. She felt someone laying beside her, knew the bed wasn't hers. She rolled over, staring directly into cerulean eyes..
Seto looked taken aback, then murmured gently,"You were crying in your sleep." He brushed a wayward strand of silver hair behind her ear, gently touching her cheek, the smiled softly at her.
She faltered, sensing something was amiss. It was just barely midnight. Seto didn't get home until at least one. Her suspicions were proved correct when he donned a wicked smile, his eyes cold.
She knew that smile. Knew it all too well. "No..." she squeaked out.
"Kit..." He breathed his nickname for her, already turning back into Morfin's twisted features.
Then she was that little girl all over again, scared and miserable and cornered. And she hated it.
Her screams were just as loud as they were before.
