"Mika?" Mokuba asked the girl, who sat on the sofa next to Seto, watching the fire burning in the fireplace.
"Mmhmm?" she asked, turning to look at the raven-haired boy,"What is it?"
"Well, I have to do a project for school for Valentine's Day, about first loves. Who was yours?" he asked, eyes wide and curious.
Seto turned his head to watch Mika as she thought, then a dreamy smile drifted across her face.
"Well... The story starts at a beach, when I was little..."
---------------------------------------
"What is that, exactly?"
A 10-year-old Mika looked up from her sandcastle to see a brown-haired boy crouched down, looking at an assortment of rocks. "Rocks, maybe?" she asked wryly, turning back to her castle. She was almost done with her third tower when a large stone landed smack in the middle of it. "Hey!"
She turned to glower at the grinning boy, his sapphire eyes sparking with mischief, then stood. "If you wanted me to get up, you could have just asked," she whined.
"That's never fun," he taunted, his grin growing. "Besides, it's not like you would've listened!"
She pouted slightly, then stalked over to him to see what he was looking at. It seemed to be a cluster of rainbow-shimmered rocks and pebbles. "It's so pretty!" she whispered.
He nodded. "Yep!" He turned to her, then said,"You're pretty, too, though."
She turned pink, shrugging. "I guess. If that's really what you wanna think, anyway..."
"That is what I wanna think!" he protested,"I've always thought you were pretty!"
"Why are you telling me this now?" she asked, staring out at the ocean to keep him from seeing her blush. There was silence for a moment.
"Well..." he began slowly,"I might get adopted soon. Me and my little brother." He smiled. "I've heard news there's a guy coming to the orphanage, and he wants a son."
"Really? That's great!" she said enthusiastically,"I hope it all turns out good!"
"Yeah, me too!" he agreed with a small laugh. After a moment, he then asked,"Can I hold your hand?"
She looked taken aback, but nodded, and he took her hand in his. "You know, if you get adopted, I may never see you again," she mumbled.
"No way! I'll find you, I promise! Then we'll always be together!"
She looked at him, eyes wide and slightly filled with tears. "You promise? Forever and ever?"
"Promise!" he agreed, smiling at her reassuringly,"Forever and forever and forever!"
----------------------------
Mokuba's grin stretched idely and he cooed,"Aww! That's so sweet!" He thought, then asked,"Did you ever find him?"
Mika shook her head. "Not long after that he was adopted, then I was. Never saw him again."
The whole time, Seto had been watching her with an incredulous look on his face until Mokuba turned to him.
"Who was your first love, Seto?" the boy asked.
Seto deliberated for a moment, then smiled softly, pulling Mika into a gentle embrace. "She just told my story quite well." He chuckled at Mika's stunned expression. "I told you I'd find you," he repeated,"Forever and forever and forever."
