She stood alone as her friends left her for other cliques. Snow fell on her, giving her coat a fine layer of white on the shoulders. But she couldn't feel it. Her head was pounding with terror too greatly to comprehend physical things. Her terror, her fear. It burned through her, accompanied by its companion, adrenaline, as it pulsed through her veins.
She sat on a bench, the gray stone as cold as ice from the snow. She watched as the newly-formed clique walked inside, all talking and laughing. None looked at the snow-covered girl sitting there. Alone. But when all were inside the building, one guy was left behind. He walked over to her, sitting beside her. He brushed the snow from her shoulders, then embraced her warmly.
They sat together for maybe hours, needing only their friendship for warmth. He had stopped her worst fear from taking over. He had stopped her fear of being alone dead in its tracks. And she was ever grateful to him. Forever more, and always.
